A Short Look Back at The Game Development Process

Going into the A Game By Its Cover game jam I already knew I wanted to make a one page print and play game. I had been introduced to the idea of business card sized games, though I've not really dabbled in any single page print and play games. I had several games I was considering, but Bagel Quest immediately presented me with an idea I liked.

I have included some images of my first thoughts and run throughs of the game. The major difference between that and the current one was the addition of the monsters. I did go back to the initial cartridge idea, which had the idea of fighting off monsters, and decided to add that in. Various other tweaks were made dealing with the length of the game, which was hard to determine until it had been played through initially.

Beyond that, most of the challenging part was determining the layout to fit the space I wanted to use, while both conveying the rules and helping the player navigate their story. I think I did a fairly good job of this, thankfully I knew of Google Slides as a convenient way to arrange tables, text boxes, and images. Though, it is hard to self evaluate myself on this as I already know how the game is supposed to be played.

The game met my initial goal of just a simple game that can be played quickly, but with as much imagination as the player desires. The one thing I would still want to improve is the art to the pages. Not just the two drawings, but the general look of the layout as well. This is something I may go back and work on in the future.

Finally, at the start of the game jam I decided to document each bagel I consumed during the jam, so here they all are in their glory...sadly, none are as exciting as what you can make in the game.  The are, in photo order:

  • Plain bagel with cream cheese, turkey, and homemade daikon pickles
  • T-Street from Bagel Shack (Cheddar bagel with chive cream cheese, tomato, onion, and melted cheddar)
  • Chocolate Chip from I Heart Bagels
  • 2 Plain bagels with cream cheese, turkey, and homemade strawberry jelly
  • Sesame from I Heart Bagels
  • Plain bagel with cream cheese and turkey
